It was noon, and the old town was stiffening in the heat. The need for freshness outweighing hunger, I entered the Lutheran church where Michel Muller was giving a recital. Listening to Michel, I thought that it was with this sensitivity that I would like to play the piano. So I googled him, brought the piano down from the attic, and enrolled at EPMM.

My busy professional life does not allow for very consistent practice, which is probably why the student has not yet surpassed the master. But Michel does not hold it against me. He adapts to my whims with Olympian calm. He tailors his teaching to my negligence.

Yet nothing escapes him: my third finger playing the note that should have been played with the fourth, the note that would have sounded better in forte rather than mezzo forte, the bass held a bit too long that alters the next chord.

With Michel, even if you’re not a good student, you feel respected, and you have a good time, sometimes even straying from musical practice to discuss what seems important to us.

I’m sure it will take me a bit more time, a lot of practice, the keys of the keyboard will need changing because they will be worn out, but one day, I will play him a piece that will make him cry with emotion.
